M-Indicator- Mumbaikar’s Lifeline

Ever found yourself grappling to find your way in a new city. Not to worry. If you are in Mumbai, an app is just what you need to make your life simpler! m-indicator is an all-in-one digital information app mainly for the residents and visitors of Mumbai. It is a one-stop guide for commuters in Mumbai and Pune using local railway, metro, mono-rail, and express trains. The app also covers information on other modes of transportations such as bus routes, taxis, autos and ferries, including options to search for vendors and book taxis using the app itself.

m-Indicator was launched by Mobond in May 2010. The original app was launched to be compatible with Android, iOS and Windows-enables phones. Now, it is also compatible with Blackberry and Java phones. The app is a boon for the train commuters in Mumbai who can get information on train timetables, live train status and find connected routes to plan their journeys. Last year, some new features were added to the app including train chat service which allows commuters to use the app as a social medium to share information on train delays, cancellation and platform changes. Furthermore, the app provides an indication for less crowded trains at Borivali and other stations during peak hours.

The app does not stop here and also furnishes details on nearby places, picnic spots, movies, theatre plays, classifieds, emergency telephone services, and travel alerts. A ‘woman safety’ feature was also added to the app last year which doesn’t depend on GPS or internet to function. The app is handy when it comes to planning your travel through the city, but carries few drawbacks. The app provides a single railroad map instead of interactive map-route options to get instant information on the route between two places. For some features like movie listings and picnic spots, the app redirects you to google pages requiring the user to incur extra data charges outside of app.

Having said that, this app is a must-app if you are visiting the city and should be able to serve as a one-stop destination for relevant information on plethora of subjects including travel, entertainment, and safety.

Media reviews:

 A must have: m-Indicator packs in a wealth of information. – Mid Day

ï‚· It is a definite must-have if you live in Mumbai or if you plan on taking a trip to (or through) Mumbai. There’s no doubt about that. With regards to the look, feel and other App-like functions, we were really surprised to see that a semi-emulated Java app actually functions so well inside Android. Truly– that is a big plus for us, and it says a lot about the efficiency of the developers. Further, with an Indian-focussed mentality, they’ve not made the app use GPRS – using SMSes instead. For these kindof tiny niceties alone, we’d rate the app highly. Throw in the extreme usefulness of the app – and it seriously becomes one of the “cannot live without” type of apps. Go ahead and download it. Do let us know your thoughts and experiences with the app below. – The Indian Geek
